Bedford Adult Detention Center Overview

Bedford Adult Detention Center is a Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority facility serving the Bedford County custody channel. It is not operated as a stand-alone sheriff-run county jail page. The Bedford County Sheriff's Office may be the arresting or reporting agency in a case, but jail custody, roster lookup, mail, visitation, phone, commissary, and many booking-record questions route through BRRJA. The official facility profile lists Bedford Adult Detention Center as the Bedford site and identifies Captain M. Cahow as site administrator.

The facility type is best described as a regional jail or local adult detention center. It has served Bedford-area pretrial detainees and local or regional jail inmates when operating in the BRRJA system. Official reporting also creates an important caution: the 2024 Bedford Adult Detention Center PREA and sexual-violence annual report showed no confined people, no new admissions, and no average daily population for that reporting year. That dated report should be treated as an operational and maintenance-period nuance, not as a reason to ignore the official Bedford roster path.

Bedford Facility Population

Bedford Adult Detention Center has a long facility history within the BRRJA system. The BRRJA 2022 planning-study RFP states that the Bedford facility was constructed in the early 1950s, expanded in the early 2000s, and had 99 available beds. Historical census-context data listed 89 local beds or persons for December 31, 2013, but that figure should not be used as the current population.

The most specific recent official Bedford facility population figure is the 2024 BRRJA annual PREA and sexual-violence report for BADC. It reported 0 people confined on December 31, 2024, 0 new admissions during 2024, and 0 average daily population for 2024. BRRJA authority-wide figures can still show jail population elsewhere in the regional system, so Bedford County inmate population figures must separate the Broad Street facility from the broader BRRJA network.

Lookup Bedford Detention Center Inmates

The official lookup path for local Bedford jail custody is the BRRJA Bedford JailTracker roster. The roster is reached from the Bedford Adult Detention Center service tile labeled "Locate BADC Inmates." A public text render of the roster can be blocked by a Blazor shell, captcha-related app code, or error, but the official app model supports search by name, current or released search settings, offender profile records, charges, bond fields, holds, case numbers, and image fields.

  1. Open the official BRRJA Bedford roster or start at the Bedford Adult Detention Center facility page.
  2. Search by last name, then add a first name if the result set needs to be narrowed.
  3. Complete any captcha or current-inmate filter that the Public Safety Cloud roster presents.
  4. Open the person profile and compare the name, booking date, charge, bond, hold, and release fields.
  5. Call Bedford Adult Detention Center or BRRJA if a new booking, transfer, or release is not yet reflected online.

The BRRJA roster is different from the VADOC inmate and supervisee locator. Use VADOC after a Bedford case becomes state custody or supervision. Use the BOP locator for sentenced federal prisoners and ICE ODLS for immigration detention. Neither BOP nor ICE should be treated as a Bedford Adult Detention Center roster.

Bedford Jail Address and Contact

For custody confirmation, visiting questions, records routing, or service rules, use the facility and BRRJA contact channels before traveling. The facility page gives a direct Bedford phone and fax. BRRJA headquarters can also route authority-level questions, including FOIA, policy, and regional service issues. The Bedford County Sheriff's Office is a separate contact for sheriff reports and arrest files, not the direct operator of the detention center.

Bedford Jail Visiting Rules

BRRJA visitation rules apply across authority facilities, but the visible schedule shows Amherst, Halifax, and Lynchburg blocks rather than a Bedford-specific schedule. For Bedford Adult Detention Center, the safe instruction is to call 540-587-9282 before planning a visit. A visitor must be on the inmate's visitation list, must present valid picture ID, and may be searched. Damaged, taped, torn, or altered ID is not accepted under the published rules.

BRRJA bars electronics in the visitation area unless the site administrator approves them. No more than three adult visitors may visit at one time, and a former inmate must wait six months after release before visiting anyone at a BRRJA facility. Visitors are limited to once per week. Minors must be with a parent or legal guardian or have the proper notarized juvenile visitation form with an authorized adult visitor.

Bedford Jail Mail and Money

BRRJA mail rules use an offsite scanning address for personal mail. Personal letters, pictures, and drawings must be addressed with the facility name, inmate name, inmate number, P.O. Box 247, Phoenix, MD 21131. Personal mail sent to a BRRJA site is returned to sender except legal mail and money orders. Legal mail and money orders should not go to the Phoenix scanning address.

Mail is scanned by a contracted offsite facility and delivered electronically by tablet. BRRJA rules also restrict photos, cards, books, magazines, newspapers, stickers, glitter, plastic, and other items. Inmates may not keep more than 10 pictures; Polaroids and framed pictures are barred, and photos larger than 4 by 6 are not accepted. Money orders mailed alone are accepted at facilities, but no cash, certified checks, personal checks, or drop-offs are accepted under the mail page rules.

Bedford Jail Records Requests

Use BRRJA FOIA for jail-operation records, booking records, roster details, housing records, booking photos held by the authority, and detention-center service records. The BRRJA FOIA page names Patricia Stevens as FOIA Officer and gives 434-847-3100 extension 1224 and foiarequest@brrja.state.va.us. A strong request names the person, date of arrest or booking, record type, booking number if known, and whether electronic copies are requested.

Use the Bedford County Sheriff's FOIA process for sheriff reports, CAD sheets, arrest reports, and sheriff-generated investigative records. Sheriff Mike Miller's office is at 1345 Falling Creek Road, Bedford, VA 24523, with main phone 540-586-4800. The sheriff page states that public records are presumed open unless an exemption applies, but it also lists criminal-investigation and safety-plan exemptions. A requester should not ask BRRJA to create new records or answer broad questions; FOIA covers existing records.

Bedford Detention Center Directions

Bedford Adult Detention Center is listed at 1000 Broad Street in Bedford. The address is separate from the Bedford County Sheriff's Office on Falling Creek Road and from the Bedford courthouse on East Main Street. People handling jail visits, money-order mail rules, or custody questions should call the detention center before travel because the Bedford-specific visitation schedule was not visible on the BRRJA schedule page.

Note: Confirm custody, visit eligibility, and current operating status with Bedford Adult Detention Center before traveling to Broad Street.
